The Semiotic Signification in Symbols of Universities

Abstract

           This article aimed to study the semiotic signification in the symbol of the university that was the color of the university. The source material was the 77 university's documents and the official websites. The data were analyzed by interpretation based on Roland Barths' framework of semiotic theory.  The finding indicated that each of universities used the different university colors based on contexts. Most universities used two colors as the university colors, which were followed by a single color, and a few used three colors as university color. Among the colors of universities in which the two colors that were used, the most used was yellow which indicated the color of the King's birthday, signifying prosperity. Among color of univerisities in which one color that was used, the color most used by the university was green, which indicated the color of the King's birthday and the nature, which signified abundance. Among the colors of universities in which the three colors were used, the colors most used were blue and white which indicated the color of the King’s birthday and the color of religion, which signified purity, and overall these implied the importance of honoring the national, royal and religious instituition.
