Victim Mentality of Kim Ji- Young Character from The literature “Kim Ji- Young Born: 1982”

Abstract

How women’s role in Korean society change from the past into the present? It’s one of crucial argument that needed to be study, if we would like to have a greater understand of Korean society. Nowadays, Korea had rapidly developed in our world stage. Curiously, the gaps between men and women in Korea still existing? Due to recently there are Feminism phenomenon.  Therefore, this article aims to study women in Korean society from the literature called “Kim Ji- Young Born: 1982 (82년생 김지영)” through leading character “Kim Ji-Young”. Currently have create a feminist trends in Korea. The literature “Kim Ji- Young Born: 1982” had written by Cho Num Joo where first published in October 2016 and sales 270,000 books in a short time. The literature had translated to, at least 18 languages around the world. Afterwards, from the literature, there is a movie produced and released in Thailand in January 2020. This article focused on analysis of the main character over the literature version that had translated into Thai. The story basically presented a simple story of women’s life and experiences from 1982 to 2016. Even though the story seems to present an ordinary women’s life in Korea with Korean culture context.  Introduced women in a role of good wives and an idol mother in marriage life of aspect in Korean society. Additionally, the plot had insert how women might face unfair situation along their livelihoods. The author presented in the theme of normality and naturalistic of women roles in myth of Korean society, which in one perspective may find it unequal between men and women that have hidden in Korean society in 1982 to 2016. Consequently, Character analysis has significant implications or understanding women in Korean society between 1982 to 2016. From analyzed throughout the literature discovered that, the main character was created to be a victim mentality. Victim mentality is whom have an acquired personality in which blaming challenges in life and/or blame other people in many circumstances as being unfair.
