Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the information seeking behavior and barriers to information seeking in conducting assignments of Chinese major students in Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University. Eisenberg and Berkowitz’ Information Problem-Solving Model was used as a framework in studying information seeking behavior. Wilson and Walsh’ intervening variables in information seeking behavior were used to study barriers to students’ information seeking. Interviewing was the method of collecting qualitative data from 19 informants. The informants were purposively selected from the fourth-year undergraduate students who were studying at the Chinese language department in the first semester of academic year 2020. The research results were found that information-seeking behavior of students in the Chinese program began by defining the workload assigned by the instructor by searching for information from the Internet information sources to determine the appropriate scope of the subject to be studied. Strategies for acquiring information from sources that are the Office of Academic Resources and Information Technology and Chinese major library are established.  Internet information sources were chosen as the best source based on the reliability and content of the information. Then, students searched for and accessed information using the Online Public Access Catalog Library (OPAC), Google and Baidu. The information was read, borrowed, saved and printed by students. They consider the information that meets the needs of the table of contents of the book and reads the topic and content roughly and then use the information by reading, summarizing and recording material information about the matter. Select the relevant information by recording the data and its sources. After that, they synthesize information by reading, reviewing and revising content. Then, the contents obtained from the readings and summaries are put into the document file, sorted by issue. Then, the contents of the document are summarized, alternating with information and opinions of the students. When completing assignments, students assess their work by reviewing that they meet the criteria set by the instructor. In which all students are involved in their work. Group members may have a vague understanding of the subjects studied and have different responsibilities for assignments. The obstacle in acquiring information for the education of students in the Chinese program found that it was caused by two obstacles, namely individual characteristics and characteristics of information sources.
