Abstract

The objective of this qualitative research was to study challenges pertaining to the development of a school library in Ban Tha Nun school in Krabi Province, Thailand. In the process of this investigation, the researchers examined and reviewed various sources and applied three theories, namely: the Intelligence Development Theory, the Theory of Learning, and the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, in order to establish a conceptual framework and for the purposes of data analysis. The research consisted of eight key informants, including: the school director, the school's institutional committee, professional level teachers and the administrative staff, respectively. Relevant data were then collected through participants’ observations and group discussions, as well as through semi-structured interviews, using appropriate forms, prior and after the research. The Octagon Library Project was then implemented as a part of the field work activity from August 2020 to December 2020.  Triangulation methods were used for data analysis and for the purpose of discussions. The research results revealed that the school’s library encountered a number of challenges, including: lack of suitable library materials, inadequate physical environment, lack of appropriate technology and reading activities, as well as the absence of a fulltime librarian.  Thus, the implementation of the Library’s Project helped to resolve a number of related issues and led to a more effective and organized library with appropriate library resources for its young users. Building an online Octagon Library website, as a part of this research, encouraged more technology use as a new method for reading and learning, and created more interest in using the library in general. This will likely help to cultivate greater reading habits, support teachers’ instruction, and will assist with teaching activities.
