Bibliotherapy: A Systematic Literature Review and Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

This study aimed to conduct a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis of research articles on "Bibliotherapy" indexed in the SCOPUS database from 1942 to 2024. Utilizing VOSviewer and Bibliometrix with R, a total of 540 publications were analyzed. The results indicate a significant increase in research productivity over the period. The most prolific authors were PARDECK, JOHN T. and SCOGIN, FORREST R. The United States of America contributed the largest number of research articles (118), and the University of Nevada (USA) was the most active affiliated institution (24articles). The Journal of Poetry Therapy was the most frequent publication venue (83 articles), classified as a Q3 journal with an H-index of 19. Content analysis of the research themes identified seven core clusters: (1) Integration of Bibliotherapy, Reading Therapy, and Literature Therapy Concepts; (2) Clinical Applications focusing on Depression and Anxiety; (3) Research Methodology emphasizing Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) and integration with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); (4)Bibliotherapy for Youth to promote Empathy; (5)Creative Bibliotherapy for Children's Emotional Regulation; (6)Modern Therapy Concepts integrating with Mindfulness; and (7)Poetry Therapy. The thematic evolution of bibliotherapy research revealed four distinct periods: (1) The Pioneering Era (1942-1998) focused primarily on bibliotherapy and depression; (2) The Conceptual Expansion Era (1999-2013) introduced the use of children's literature and poetry therapy to enhance quality of life; (3) The Knowledge Integration Era (2014-2020) saw rapid development through integration with mindfulness and internet-based interventions for anxiety and addiction; and (4)The Contemporary Era (2021-2024) emphasizes a transition toward evidence-based practice expanding into library contexts. This trend reflects a shift from a rigid medical model to a broader approach of healing and psychological well-being through reading and book-based recovery programs.
