Abstract

This research conducted a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis of research articles concerning GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) within the SCOPUS database from 1940 to 2025, utilizing VOSviewer and Bibliometrix with R. A total of 327 articles were identified, showing an increasing publication trend. Key findings indicate that Candela, Gustavo is the most prolific author, the United Kingdom is the top contributing country, and the University of Leeds is the most highly cited affiliated institution. The most published journal is the Journal of Open Humanities Data (Q3, H-index 4). The research topics were analyzed and subsequently divided into eight primary clusters, reflecting the evolving scope of GLAM studies. These clusters include traditional institutional functions such as (1) Role of GLAM Centers, and management aspects like (4) GLAM Governance. A significant focus is placed on digital and access strategies, specifically (2) GLAM Open Data, (3) Digital Humanities, and (5) GLAM Information Retrieval. Furthermore, the analysis highlights emerging technological and participatory research areas, namely (6) Information Resources on Blockchain Technology, the use of linked data via (7) GLAM Institutional Data Encyclopedia, and the interactive perspective of (8) Role of Users in Content Creation within GLAM Institutions. Research Trends were analyzed across four distinct periods, revealing a significant shift from the fragmented pioneering era (1940–2014) to the current phase (2023–2025) of cross-disciplinary integration with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The study demonstrates that GLAM institutions are transitioning from their traditional role as cultural heritage conservators to becoming AI-driven integrated data centers utilized for complex scientific analysis.
