The Role of Families in the Fostering and Development of Children becoming Good Citizens in a Democratic Society

Abstract

บทบาทของครอบครัวในการปลูกฝังและพัฒนาความเป็นพลเมืองดีตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยให้กับเด็กและเยาวชนThe making of a quality citizen is considered a crucialprocess that contributes to a country’s stable democracy. The family is asignificant social institution that has tremendous influence on the fosteringof a child’s personality, beliefs, values, virtue, morality, and ethics,including the notion of good citizenship as defined by the democratic system.This definition of good citizenship encompasses self-responsibility,self-dependence, respect for others and their differences, a belief in equalityand society’s rules and laws, and upholding a sense of awareness in one’s ownresponsibility toward society and the public. Studying proposed concepts andtheories from previous research indicates that the key methodologies a familyin a democratic society should utilize when imparting the values of goodcitizenship on its pupils are (1) democratic upbringing, which is a result ofthe way a child is nurtured with love, support andreasoning, and (2) parents being role models of good citizens in a democraticsociety. The two methods will significantly contribute to a child’s democraticattitudes and behaviors from both a very young age and throughout adulthood.บทคัดย่อ การสร้างความเป็นพลเมืองดีให้กับคนในสังคมถือเป็นวิธีการที่มีความจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งในการทำให้การปกครองระบอบประชาธิปไตยของประเทศมีความมั่นคงโดยครอบครัวถือว่าเป็นสถาบันทางสังคมที่มีส่วนสำคัญในการอบรมบ่มนิสัยปลูกฝังความเชื่อ ค่านิยม คุณธรรม จริยธรรม และศีลธรรมอันดีงามให้กับเด็กรวมไปถึงปลูกฝังและพัฒนาความเป็นพลเมืองดีตามระบอบประชาธิปไตย อันประกอบไปด้วยความรับผิดชอบต่อตนเองและพึ่งตนเองได้ การเคารพผู้อื่น การเคารพความแตกต่างการเคารพความเสมอภาค การเคารพกติกาหรือเคารพกฎหมายและความรับผิดชอบต่อสังคมและส่วนรวม จากการศึกษาแนวคิดทฤษฎีและประมวลผลงานวิจัยที่ผ่านมาในอดีต พบว่าวิธีการสำคัญที่ครอบครัวควรใช้ในการถ่ายทอดความเป็นพลเมืองดีตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยประกอบไปด้วย (1) การอบรมเลี้ยงดูแบบประชาธิปไตยที่เป็นผลรวมของการอบรมเลี้ยงดูแบบรักสนับสนุนและแบบใช้เหตุผลและ (2) การเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีของบิดามารดาในการเป็นพลเมืองดีตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยซึ่งทั้ง 2 วิธีการนี้จะช่วยให้บุตรได้รับการปลูกฝังเจตคติและพฤติกรรมแบบประชาธิปไตยตั้งแต่อยู่ในช่วงวัยเด็กและจะส่งผลต่อเนื่องไปตลอดช่วงชีวิต   คำสำคัญ:  ความเป็นพลเมืองดีตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยการถ่ายทอดทางสังคมจากครอบครัว การอบรมเลี้ยงดู การเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดีของบิดามารดา
