Abstract
(Changes among Families undergoing Family Therapy Based on Satir Model: Case Studies of Adolescents with Oppositional Defiant Disorder)
Abstract
The study was to explore experiences of the family of adolescents with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) after finishing family therapy based on Satir model. Participants were 10 of adolescent caregivers (5 mothers, 3 fathers, and 2 grandmothers ), who were selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected by using in-depth interviews and observation, and analyzed by using a consensus qualitative research method (CQR). The results showed that before starting family therapy, all the participants suffered from anxiety about their child’s problems, having conflict in child rearing and low self-confidence for taking care of the child. Besides, they perceived that the adolescents were stubborn, stressful, pressured, and had low self-esteem. Moreover, there were violent quarrels between them and their child which induced a variety of family imbalance issues. During the Family Therapy Sessions, the parents/adolescents have changed in the same way in four aspects: 1) having more time to take care of the kid and focus on their job; 2) starting to their mind for listening and understanding each other which enhanced agreement and positive relationships; 3) being aware of their values and reducing over protection; and 4) adolescents had higher self-confident and self-control. After finishing Family Therapy Sessions, parents and adolescents had changed similarly in three aspects they reported the undergone: 1) higher positive communication and relationship; 2) were more proud of themselves; and 3) adolescents become more self-confident. This study revealed that parents who have Family Therapy based on Satir Model tend to have positive experiences of changes if they have reviewed and practiced homework continually after the therapy sessions. Eventually, they would have found their own power of self and ability to solve family problems appropriately.
