Local Wisdom of Plamam (Fermented Fish) Production of Playuan-Plamam Community Enterprise in Suphan Buri Province

Abstract

This research aims to study the local wisdom of producing “Pla Ham” (fermented fish) by the community enterprise of “Pla Ham and Hammock” in Suphanburi Province. It is a qualitative research study. The sample group consists of local scholars, leaders, community enterprise members, academics knowledgeable in local wisdom of “Pla Ham” production, and consumers of “Pla Ham” The researchers collected data through observation and unstructured interviews, analyzed the data through content analysis, and verified reliability using triangulation. The research findings reveal that the general condition of the community shows that most of the population practices Christianity, with unique religious customs, traditions, and conservation of local resources. Their simple lifestyle has been passed down from ancestors. The community is located in the Song Phi Nong District, in a basin area along the Tha Chin River, providing abundant water resources for agriculture. Most of the population still engages in agriculture, fishing, hammock weaving, and “Pla Ham” production a long-standing wisdom passed down through generations and aligned with current circumstances. This research offers recommendations for creating sustainability in local wisdom by developing the production of “Pla Ham” to meet the current consumer demands. It helps raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of local food wisdom and fosters sustainability in the community's economy in the future.
