Abstract

This article explores the integration of creativity and improvisation in electric guitar education within the context of Chinese secondary education. Historically, Chinese music education has emphasized technical proficiency, but recent reforms emphasize fostering well-rounded individuals capable of critical thinking and innovation, reflecting broader cultural shifts. The integration of creative expression through improvisation and composition is seen as essential for cultivating personal and artistic growth in students. This approach allows for deeper engagement with music theory and provides students the opportunity to develop their musical identities, blending traditional values with modern pedagogical techniques. Culturally, the article discusses how guitar-based genres such as jazz, blues, and rock, with their improvisational roots, provide valuable learning frameworks for students, connecting both Western and Chinese musical influences. Technology, particularly digital tools like DAWs and looping pedals, plays an instrumental role in expanding students' creative capabilities. Moreover, the incorporation of these methods aligns with the Chinese educational emphasis on cognitive and emotional development, encouraging self-expression, resilience, and adaptability in students. The article examines the broader cultural implications of incorporating creativity in education, highlighting how these practices are reshaping the role of music education in Chinese society and providing students with the skills necessary to navigate both the academic and performance worlds. This article presented (1) concepts related to electric guitar teaching in secondary education, and (2) integrating creativity and improvisation in electric guitar education.
