Abstract

          This article was submitted as a partial fulfillment for the requirements of thesis entitled “Physical Characteristics of Art Galleries in Bangkok”. The purposes of this article were to study and compare physical characteristics of art galleries in Bangkok and to analyze the factors affecting art galleries sizes. From fieldwork observation of a case study of physical characteristics of art galleries in Bangkok, types of buildings were categorized into 3 types (according to Ministerial Regulation No. 33 and 55 (B.E. 2543) as follows: – 1. 2 special size buildings (larger than 10,000 square meters) which were Art and Culture Center and Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). 2. 2 large buildings (larger than 2,000 square meters) which were S.A.C. Subhashok The Arts Centre and Museum Thailand 3. 2 buildings (smaller than 2,000 square meters) which were Bangkok city gallery and Yenakert villa. The physical characteristics of buildings were investigated by the survey, analysis and comparison factors affecting buildings’ sizes.

          The results indicated that those 6 art gallery buildings in Bangkok had complete 6 physical factors which were structure, materials, color tone, decorative elements, building image and building usage in every building But the 3 physical factors which are color tone, appearance and decorative elements Does not directly affect the usable area of the building. The results indicated that the most important factor affecting the building’s size was building usage, followed by decorative elements. Other factors were found in every building but did not affect the art gallery’s size.
