Abstract

The objective of the article is to analyse the interpretation of facial makeup of protagonists on the Thai soap opera “Samee Tee Tra,” by using the concept of representation and the concept of binary opposition to convey the different meaning of the leading characters. It was found that, in Samee Tee Tra, the stereotype of female protagonist is definitely destroyed by facial makeup. It reflects the relations between “text” and “context”, i.e. the female protagonist doesn’t wear makeup in the style of good character, nor does the female antagonist. This not only demonstrates the binary opposition concept, but also shows the new dimension of interpretation of the protagonists in Thai TV drama.
