ความสัมพันธ์ทางการเมืองและศาสนาระหว่างศรีลังกากับไทยในพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18

บทคัดย่อ
แม้ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศรีลังกากับประเทศไทยจะเกิดขึ้นเนิ่นนานแล้วก็จริง แต่หลักฐานฝ่ายศรีลังกากลับให้ความสำคัญโดยเริ่มต้นจากพุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 ซึ่งสมัยนั้นอาณาจักรตามพรลิงค์ของไทยกำลังรุ่งเรืองเกรียงไกรเป็นที่รู้จักของนานาอารยวิเทศ ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างสองอาณาจักรสมัยนี้โดดเด่นเฉพาะด้านการเมืองและการศาสนา ด้านการเมืองนั้นปรากฏเห็นในลักษณะคู่สงคราม ส่วนด้านการศาสนาปรากฏเห็นในลักษณะเกื้อกูลกันและกัน กล่าวเฉพาะด้านการเมือง สมัยนั้นอาณาจักรตามพรลิงค์ของไทยมีกองทัพเรืออันแข็งแกร่งเกรียงไกร จึงสามารถยกทัพไปบุกรุกเกาะลังกา แม้หลักฐานฝ่ายศรีลังกาจะยืนยันว่าฝ่ายไทยต้องการยึดครองพระเขี้ยวแก้วก็จริง แต่หากมองอีกมุมหนึ่งน่าจะเป็นเพราะต้องการควบคุมเส้นทางการค้าทางทะเล เพราะสมัยนั้นจักรวรรดิโจฬะอ่อนแรงโรยลาลง ส่วนด้านศาสนานั้น ทั้งสองอาณาจักรมีลักษณะเกื้อกูลสงเคราะห์กัน สมัยก่อนลัทธิลังกาวงศ์รุ่งเรืองแพร่หลายเป็นที่รู้จักของดินแดนอุษาคเนย์ แต่ย่างเข้าสมัยอาณาจักรดัมพเดณิยะการพระศาสนาบนเกาะลังกาทรุดโทรมเสื่อมถอยเพราะภัยสงครามต่อเนื่องยาวนาน พระสงฆ์แห่งอาณาจักรตามพรลิงค์จึงเดินทางไปช่วยฟื้นฟูการพระศาสนา การสงเคราะห์กันด้านศาสนานี้เองมีส่วนช่วยลดความตึงเครียดทางการเมืองระหว่างสองอาณาจักรได้เป็นอย่างดี
