A Study of the Guideline of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto’s Insight Meditation Practice

Abstract

          The purposes of the research entitled “A study of the guideline of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto’s Insight Meditation Practice” were; 1) to study the principle of Tranquil Meditation and Insight Meditation in Buddhism 2) to study the guideline of Insight Meditation of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto and 3) to enhance the guideline of Insight Meditation of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto. This research was the qualitative research by studying the data from documents and field study. The results of study were analyzed and proposed by using the descriptive analysis.
          A study of the principle of Tranquil and Insight Meditation has a lot methods including practicing Dhamma that is called “ the Subjects of Meditation”, the mental foundation, by the principle, has two characteristics, that is, (1) Tranquil Meditation means to put the mind on the foundation in order to make the mind stop, stillness, and peace and consisting the Meditation Devices, that is, Ten meditation devices, Constant mindfulness, Ten kinds of foulness, Four sublime states of mind, Absorption of Formless, Four Peroeption of the loathsomeness of food, and Analysis of the Four Elements and (2) Insight meditation: the sense objects of Insight Meditation can be classified into 4 items, that is, Five Aggregates, Twelve Spheres, Eighteen Elements, Twenty two spiritual faculties, Four Noble Truths, and Twelve Dependent Arising. The Insight Meditation is translated into the objects that are the locations of spiritual works that will clearly realize of mentality and corporeality, Three characteristics of existence, Noble Truths, Way, Result and Nibbana.
          A study of the guideline of practicing the Insight Meditation of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto was found that he laid out the guideline in practice of Tranquil and Insight Meditation in accordance with the Buddha’s teaching but he emphasize on practicing the Buddha’s Virtue by putting the mindfulness by reciting Buddho, Buddho, Buddho in harmony with each other until dexterousness and skillfulness but he emphasized on contemplating the mindfulness with regard to the body and loathsome contemplation such as hair, feather, skin, meat sinew and bones etc. All these can be divided in to parts and realizing that this body is full of dirtiness, ugliness, filthiness, tiresome, not to have confidence in it and to have faith in as the self. Meditators begin to realize of the truth of this body and always contemplate until the mind becomes peace by contemplating that this body has nothing, having only the Four elements, that is, Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and they contemplate the body by diving the body into various groups such as this part is Earth, Water, Wind, Fire integrated together, there have no creature, person, self, we, he/she. This action will make us to realize quickly. He emphasized this contemplation and his teaching is the guideline of leading the mind up to the sphere of Insight Meditation.
          The guideline of enhancing the practice of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto is that The Cittanuphap Institute opened the curriculum of learning and practiced the Meditation in accordance with the guideline of Loungpu Man Bhuridatto by Phrabhrommonkon (Viriyang Sirindharo) of Wat Dhammongkon in Bangkok applying the principle of Loungpu Man’ s teaching and the practical methods that passed the practice for 70 years by writing as the systematic curriculum and easy understanding. This curriculum can be learned by everyone without division of sex and To apply all these teachings to be the mental refuge in the aspect of spiritual development, in the aspect of morality for the personnel and students of University and for general people who get interested in practice by enhancing them to practice Dhamma, giving, preserving precepts and spiritual development and they can apply the knowledge and understanding related to the Dhamma practice for daily lifestyle by spending time for studying 6 months ( 200 hrs,) This curriculum can be brought for teaching people and considered as the curriculum for practicing meditation as high technology in agreeable with the lives of people in the period of globalization.
