A study of subtitle translation strategies in animated films. Naja story: when the little devil is born

Abstract

          Nezha's Demon Child is one of the most influential Chinese comic films to be made overseas. There is a lot of traditional Chinese culture embedded in Nezha's Advent. Therefore, it is important for the translator to make Chinese culture accessible to overseas audiences and to obtain the best possible viewing experience. I use naturalisation and dissimilation strategies as the theoretical basis to analyse the translator's use of naturalisation and dissimilation strategies in the translation process, in terms of characterisation, vocabulary, and limerick poetry as shown in the English subtitles of Nezha's Advent. The analysis shows that the translator prefers to use the naturalisation strategy when translating. When necessary, the translators will choose a combination of naturalisation and dissimilation strategies to translate. However, the translators' extensive use of naturalisation strategies in characterisation affects the distinctness of the characters; the use of naturalisation strategies in proper nouns affects the audience's understanding to a certain extent; and the translators' lack consideration of the audience's age group in the choice of slang in the target language.
