The Turnover and Retention of Newsroom Employees in Thai Public Broadcast Television Stations

Abstract

          The objectives of this research were to study (1) the concepts and policies of 2 Thai public broadcast televisions, namely, the Royal Thai Army Radio and Television Channel 5 (TV 5HD) and Thai PBS Television Station (Thai PBS) as a whole and in various aspects after the transition of television business from analog system to digital system; (2) the real causes and necessities of the decision to resign of newsroom employees in Thai public broadcast televisions; and (3) major strategies of the organizations or approaches for retention in order to reduce the turnover of newsroom employees in Thai public broadcast televisions. The method of qualitative research typical of Case Study was used by In-Depth Interview the key informants were 40 persons, who were the executive and personnel levels.
          The study findings were as follows.
          1. The concepts and policies of Thai public broadcast televisions of both case studies consisted of technology organization structure management and adjusting the main program schedule to respond to consumer behavior.
          2. The key factors affecting the decision to resign of newsroom employees in Thai public broadcast televisions of both case studies resulted from the internal and external environment of the organizations.
          3. The approaches and strategies for retention to reduce the turnover of newsroom employees of both case studies consisted of individual development, career development, organizational development and performance management, personnel development and building organizational culture.
