The sufficiency Economy principle in Thailand’s Sustainable Development Plan

Abstract

     “Sufficiency Economy” is a philosophy conceived and developed by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The philosophy is a principle for appropriate conduct by the populace at all levels. NESDB as the central  planning authority of Thailand, has adopted the philosophy into the formulation of the five-year national development plan since the Ninth National Economic and Social Development Plan (NESDP) and has translated
the philosophy into actions in various aspects with supports from development partners e.g. public sector, private sector, civil society, local government, and communities. The translation of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP) during the 12th NESDP period focuses on the linkages of SEP to SDGs based on the idea that SEP is the principle guideline for implementing SDGs’ activities based on three principle : moderation,
reasonableness, immunity and two conditions : moral and knowledge condition,particularly knowledge in all social and environmental contexts. The goal of SDGs based on SEP is to create a balanced and stable development and lead to the long- term vision “stability, prosperity, and sustainability” as the ultimate goal of sustainable development.
