Elderly’s viewpoints as determinants of quality of life: A Q methodology study

The purpose of this study was to explore and identify the determinants of the elderly’s quality of life according to the viewpoints of the elderly in Wat Bang Prong community, Chachoengsao province, by using Q methodology. Nineteen of elderly were selected by purposive sampling by conducting the cluster analysis of the scores from the World Health Organization quality of life-old module (WHOQOL-OLD) where 55 Q-statements were sorted by priority on a thirteen-point scale, ranging from -6 to 6. Q-exploratory factor analysis in this study demonstrated four types of perspectives of elderly’s quality of life which consisted of 1) Pride in living 2) Altruism 3) Inter/Intrapersonal understanding and 4) security, safety, and sociocultural eco system. These 22 dominant statements were separated with 6, 5, 5, and 6 statements by each factor respectively. The determinant-viewpoints of elderly’s quality of life may apply for policy, planning and practice in the elderly task force in order to develop and enhance quality of life of older citizens.
