PHA PHAWED: NORTHEASTERN BUDDHIST TRADITION SYMBOL

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present Pha Phawed, which is a symbol of Northeastern Buddhist tradition. The results showed that the Pha Phawed is a long piece of cloth that depicts the story of Vessantara Jataka for use in the procession of Vessatara ceremony. Pha Phawed is a medium to give symbolic meaning to the Buddhist scriptures of the characters. It is assumed that a procession of Vessantara Jataka into the city in the age of Vessantar king. Painter artisans were usually local artisans. Therefore, they use colors to imitate nature, It is not very strict about the proportions of shapes, people, animals, objects, and things according to the beliefs of the Northeastern people Pha Phawed is not only an ornament used in the traditions and it is also decorated to look beautiful. But there are also ideas and stratagem. It made people in the sacred ceremony learn the Buddha doctrine from the shape and color of the Pha Phawed. It will be a way to live out of suffering.
