Spatial Comparison of Crime Occurrence from Crime Plan Reports against Foreigners in Phuket and Bangkok

Abstract

The continuous increase in foreign tourists visiting Thailand reflected confidence in safety. This qualitative research aimed to compare suspect behaviors towards foreign victims in criminal incidents in Phuket and Bangkok. Data from 100 cases per area from 2017 to 2019 were collected through documentary research. Suspect behaviors were categorized and presented in frequency distribution charts. Suspect behaviors above 50% indicated commonality, 10%-50% suggested possible links, and below 10% implied unrelated actions. Findings revealed that suspects primarily targeted foreign victims for money, often in secluded areas, with motorcycles commonly used in Phuket. Common tactics included exploiting vulnerable moments. Correlated variables in frequency charts highlighted related behaviors at the scene. To prevent such incidents, authorities should promote safety awareness, enhance surveillance, and enforce policies ensuring secure storage facilities in all temporary accommodations.
