Public Seminar: Development, Ethnic Conflict and Migration in Indonesia
Posted on 2026-04-17RCSD invites all to join a public seminar: "Development, Ethnic Conflict and Migration in Indonesia" on 28 April 2026, 15:00–17:00 (Thailand time), at Room 4107, first floor of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University, with online participation available upon registration (follow the link at bottom of this post to register).
Organized by the Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD) under its “Researching Forced Displacement in Southeast Asia” seminar series, the event examines the intersections of development, migration, and conflict in Indonesia.
Dr. Riwanto Tirtosudarmo will present research on how state-led transmigration and demographic change have reshaped ethnic relations, generating tensions over land, resources, and political representation.
The seminar highlights how migration-driven inequalities and center–periphery dynamics contribute to communal violence and displacement, and calls for rethinking development and nation-building beyond assimilationist frameworks.
