THE PREPARATION FOR NOVICE MONKS IN THAI BUDDHISM : A CASE STUDY ON THE TRAINING OF BUDDHIST MONKS

Abstract

This article examines the preparation process for novice monks in Thai Buddhism, focusing on case studies of training programs in various temples. This process is vital in helping novice monks adapt to a monastic way of life and adhere to religious disciplines. The study divides the preparation process into three stages: pre-ordination preparation, training during ordination, and post-ordination assessment. The content includes religious doctrines, meditation practices, and monastic traditions. The role of the preceptor and the teaching team is crucial in imparting knowledge and setting a positive example for the novice monks. Additionally, the study identifies factors that contribute to the success of the preparation process, including the readiness of the novice monks, the knowledge and competence of the preceptor, the temple environment, and community support. Findings indicate that integrating modern technology and teaching tools can enhance the effectiveness of the learning process. The article also suggests ways to improve the training process, such as integrating traditional Buddhist principles with contemporary social contexts, developing modern teaching materials, fostering cooperation networks among temples, and refining evaluation systems. These measures aim to ensure that the training process effectively meets societal needs while preserving the core essence of Buddhism.
