Abstract

This current study was conducted in qualitative research by aiming to investigate the narrative patterns, political and social semiotics of films that obtained the Golden Palm award during the year of 2002-2011. In this study, three films, which received the Golden Palm award, were selected to be analyzed and discussed in descriptive analysis.

The finding revealed that in those three films, they conveyed the politics and social communication through narrative structure and semiotics in both direct and indirect ways. In the first film, The Pianist, it conveyed the political and social issue through classes, music, and politics (war). In the second film, Fahrenheit 9/11, the freedom of speech, social politics, and information concealment were conveyed while the third film, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, the culture belief, social and politics were done so. These three films had a conflict in the political and social communication opposed to the binary opposition theory and the narrative patterns in politics and society which function in conveying the politics from nation to international.

Additionally, obtaining the Golden Palm award will stimulate and contribute the films to illustrate the political and social issues. It was found form the in-dept interview of movie critics about the Golden Palm award in Thailand that, mostly, the films that obtained the award, the press will get them involved with the international political and social issues during the year of receiving since the Golden Palm award gets accepted and gains attention internationally.
