Abstract

The purpose of this research article is to understand the concepts of food sovereignty, food security and food self-sufficiency as tools in electoral strategy. A case study of the 2014 Indonesian Presidential Election was conducted and determined that food self-sufficiency played a critical role in the political issues that led to the victory of the Joko Widodo government, based on constitutional proposals regarding food laws and the empowerment of farmers. These regulations shaped the institutional behavior and patterning of opponents with regard to political struggles over food in Indonesia and the government’s shift towards democracy. This research paper aims to pinpoint social changes through food issues related to election results.
