Confucian Virtues and the 5 Key Relationships Reflected in Fables from Chinese Primary School Textbooks (Grades 1–3)

This article examines the Confucian Virtues and the 5 Key Relationships as reflected in fables found in compulsory education textbooks on Language and Literature for Grades 1 to 3 in the People’s Republic of China. The analysis is based on these concepts. The findings reveal that the 8 Virtues of Confucius appear in 49 fables, ranked from the most to the least frequent as follows: zhì (wisdom), rén (kindness and benevolence), qiān (humility), lǐ (propriety), yǒng (courage), gōng (respectfulness), xìn (trustworthiness), and yì (righteousness). Regarding the analysis of the 5 Key Relationships, the relationship between friends was the most frequently observed, followed by the relationship between parents and children; the relationship between ruler and subject; and the relationship between husband and wife, respectively. However, the relationship between elder and younger siblings was not observed. Although Confucian virtues were not explicitly designated as the principal conceptual framework for the development of the fables in the textbooks, Confucian philosophy, as a long-standing foundation of Chinese thought, continues to be conveyed through these fables.
