Social Work with Involuntary Clients: Scope, Tools, and Directions for Practice Development

Abstract

This article presents an academic analysis aimed at exploring the scope of work in terms of key issues, service providers, and areas of intervention involving children in conflict with the law. It also discusses appropriate tools for practice and outlines future directions in service provision for this group. These children are considered involuntary clients who are referred to the social work system. The scope of work in terms of key issues includes treatment, correction, and rehabilitation; prevention; protection and the safeguarding of rights; and the enhancement of individual capacity and well-being. A range of agencies are involved in service delivery, including those under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Public Health, and Ministry of Labor. In terms of area-based practice, the focus is on social institutions, including the family, school, community, and society. These are addressed through appropriate approaches and tools, such as the social work intervention process, family genograms and home visits to support effective assessment and practice. The findings of this study lead to the recommendations for the future development of practice at two levels. At the macro level, this involves the creation and strengthening of networks, along with the development of relevant policies and laws. At the micro level, it involves prevention-oriented approaches and the development of knowledge, skills, and tools for practice.
