Abstract

This correlation-comparative study was based on the interactionism model as the conceptual research framework. The study aimed at investigating the important predictors in terms of psychological characteristics and situational factors on Study engagement behavior and the at-risk groups. The samples were the first-generation university students with the total of 543 undergraduate students. Data was obtained by multi-stage sampling method. The research consisted 10 measurements in the form of summated rating scales. The reliability of alpha coefficient of each measure was between .72 to .90. Multiple regression analysis results revealed that all 9 predictors from the groups of the situational factor, the psychological trait, and the psychological state, can be operated for prediction on Study engagement behavior 50.3% in the total sample. The important predictors in descending order were need for achievement, the favorable attitude toward learning, low study stress, core self-evaluation, social support from adviser/favorite teacher and expectation from family on education. The at-risk groups were low-grade point average students.
