A Comparative Study of Crime News in online and offline Newspapers

Abstract
This research compared the presentation of crime news in Thairath online and offline newspapers. As a qualitative study based on content analysis, this paper aimed to compare writing formats and structures of crime news in Thairath newspapers during the period of 1- 31 January 2017. The data were collected from two sources including 15 online news articles and 15 offline news articles (30 in total) in order to analyse the structures and writing formats of the news. The findings showed that both online and offline newspapers shared the same structures of the news articles: for writing news leads, word selection was mainly used by journalists to introduce crucial topics and clarify their stories.
In terms of introduction, authors in both sources used strong and arousing language and expressions to capture the readers’ attention and the most popular introductions began with a figurative lead. For content, it was found that journalists mostly preferred action stories to report the news. Toward the news writing format, writers in both Thairath online and offline newspapers similarly employed the inverted pyramid news writing formula.
