Abstract
This research aimed to study development, re-production and cultural adaption of Layman-chanting performance of Mahathep Bantherngsilpa group.The researcher implemented qualitative research methodology and collected data from documentary reviews, interviews, and observation.
The research found that Layman-chanting performance is one of an ancient theater performance, originated from Buddhist monk chanting with comic addition in order to entertain hosts and guests in funeral. This unique performance is rarely performed nowadays and is going to disappear through time.Mahathep Bantherngsilpa groupe has collected knowledge of Layman-chanting performance and recreated them for contemporary audience while maintained original form and elements. The group now has developed their own style of performance. The fundamental elements of their performance consisted of actors, scripts, format, music, costume, props, and venue.
The performance styles of Mahathep Bantherngsilpa group has followed the ancient styles. The performer consisted of 4 chanters namely Tua-tui, Mae-koo, Kor-song and Tua-pasa. The group has collected old chanting scripts to adapt and perform alongside the newly written ones. The scripts could be adapted to allow performers to show their skills and to be suitable for the performance occasion. The performance of the group has been developed to have their own styles and has produced new 12 miscellaneous shows. Their Layman-chanting show can be performed in various occasions and can be performed on live stage and online.
