Abstract

This thesis aims to: 1) study the cultural landscape and changes in the floating market, both geographical characteristics and way of life of people in the western Bangkok area.  The area, known as the horseshoe, is divided according to the time period from the beginning to the revival, and 2) study the factors affecting the Cultural Landscape and dynamics of the floating market. This research uses interdisciplinary integration, by combining knowledge of geography with local history and anthropology, used in-depth interviews with key informants, the field surveys and documentation studies as components. The analysis of the data can be divided into 3 periods.

The results of the study revealed that 1) The emergence early Rattanakosin and the prosperous era of the floating market in the Western Bangkok Area (1867-1947) were derived from the cultural landscape of the urban canals comprising of inland waterway networks that connected with railway lines system both internal and external economy and trading areas. 2) The deterioration of the floating market in western Bangkok (1957-1977) was a result of road cutting affected the decrease in the use of waterways. The collapse and the cessation of fruit orchards in the area due to repeated floods, as well as the change in the lower quality of ecosystems from the construction of housing estates that moved closer to floating market areas. These factors of cultural landscape caused gardeners to change their ways of life and resulted in the decrease of the popularity of the floating market.  3) The existence of the floating market during the revival period of the floating market in the Western Bangkok Area (1987-2017) was derived from cultural landscape of the area in the location in relation to the waterfront area allowing accesses for both land and water transportation.  The difference of the floating market in the past and the present can be seen from the necessity of going to the market. In the past, people in the community went to the floating market to buy or trade goods according to their daily lifestyle. But at present, the floating market has become an area for tourism.
