The Life Narrative and Carving Works of Mr. Surasak Kongsawat: His Role as a Judge in Carving Competitions

Abstract

This study was a qualitative research employing the life history and narrative approach to explore the life experiences and biography of Mr. Surasak Kongsawat in his creative journey as a carving artist. The objectives were to examine his artistic development and analyze his roles, concepts, techniques, and perspectives in the field of carving. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants, including Mr. Surasak Kongsawat himself who also serves as a carving competition judge-his colleagues, professional carvers, and carving competitors. Additional data were obtained through document analysis and non-participant observation. The findings were analyzed using content analysis in conjunction with narrative description, and data triangulation was applied to ensure credibility.

The results revealed that Mr. Surasak Kongsawat began practicing carving at a young age and continuously refined his skills through his work in hotels, integrating both formal and informal learning processes. Participation in national and international competitions significantly shaped his technical proficiency and creative outlook. His inspirations stemmed from his teachers, role models, professional peers, and his deep appreciation for Thai arts. Challenges encountered throughout his career had cultivated perseverance and discipline. He played multiple roles as both an artist and a judge in national and international carving competitions. His works demonstrated meticulous craftsmanship, creativity, and a distinctive sense of contemporary Thai identity, along with mastery of carving techniques and dedication to transmitting knowledge to younger generations of artists. His judging criteria emphasized realism, creativity, composition, and fairness. This research provided a profound understanding of the processes of learning, skill development, and artistic conceptualization within the context of Thai carving arts.
