Agricultural Anthropology: From Human-centered to Actor-Network perspective

Abstract

This article aims to propose a conceptual shift in agricultural anthropology, moving from a farmer-centered view of agriculture to both human and non-human actors. The article begins by reviewing the ideas of Robert E. Rhoades, which played a significant role in enhancing knowledge and the role of farmers in development work, but which still have limitations in explaining the complexity of contemporary agricultural systems governed by technology, markets, and global structures. The article, therefore, proposes that agricultural anthropology can shift its analytical framework to contemporary concepts such as Actor-Network Theory and a more-than-human perspective to understand agriculture as a network of relations where power and action are distributed among diverse actors. This shift allows agricultural anthropology to provide a deeper explanation of the dynamics of contemporary agricultural and food systems and opens up opportunities for analysis to connect with contemporary issues.
