Abstract

This article aims to examine the significance of Rasa Lila, or Rasapañcādhyāya (Chapters 29-33), within the Tenth Canto of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, a foundational scripture in the Vaiṣṇava tradition and a core component of the Bhakti movement. The Purāṇas played a vital role in disseminating Hindu religious teachings to all social classes, including those traditionally excluded from Vedic knowledge. Specifically, the Bhāgavata Purāṇa introduced the concept of Bhakti, pure love and devotion to God, as an accessible path to moksha (liberation) that transcends complex rituals. The Bhakti movement promoted equality and opposed the caste system, allowing individuals to connect directly with the Divine through emotional and spiritual relationships. The Tenth Canto of the Bhāgavata Purāṇa is particularly notable for its comprehensive depiction of Krishna's life and divine "līlā" (pastimes), especially the Rasa Lila dance. This dance symbolizes the sacred love between Krishna and the Gopis, representing more than just physical affection; it embodies Bhakti love, the dissolution of the ego, and a manifestation of divinity leading to ultimate union with God. Krishna's multifaceted role in the Rasa Lila is paramount: he is portrayed as an avatar of Vishnu and the cosmic center, an ideal relational figure for humanity, a spiritual preceptor, and a charismatic lover. These aspects highlight his profound ability to fulfill the individual spiritual aspirations of devotees and guide them toward liberation.
