Analysis of Isan Funeral Rituals a Culture in Transition : The Death Selling the Living
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyzes Isan funeral rituals as a cultural transition under the concept of "The Dead Selling the Living" (Khon Tai Khai Khon Pen). The study focuses on the shift from traditional rites toward forms increasingly influenced by economic and consumption dimensions, while examining the economic and psychological impacts on the bereaved families caused by social pressure. The analysis reveals that funerals in the Isan region are often elaborate and costly, ranging from 50,000 to 150,000 Baht or more, posing a severe financial burden. The phrase "The Dead Selling the Living" reflects the issue of excessive spending, particularly in cases where funeral costs reach nearly 300,000 Baht, while funeral contributions received total only in the tens of thousands. Consequently, this article proposes "guidelines for improvement or re-conceptualization" to ensure rituals align with current socio-economic conditions. The findings suggest a transition in attitude from "performing the best merit" to "performing the best planning" to alleviate the burden on descendants, following the new value of "Why parents must prepare before death". Critical spending is addressed through the phrase "The Dead Selling the Living," which directly reflects socio-economic problems. Proposed cultural and economic solutions include utilizing cremation funds and "life insurance" as tools for making merit for the deceased while establishing an economic foundation for the survivors. Recommended practices consist of financial planning, opting for economical funeral arrangements—such as alcohol-free events—and establishing collective community regulations to control subsequent risk factors.
