An Analytical Study of Ananda’s Roles in the Mahāparinibbāsutta

Abstract

This research article has three objectives: 1) to study the structure and essential content of the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta, 2) to study the roles of Ānanda Thera in the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta, and 3) to analyze the roles of Ānanda Thera in the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta. This study is documentary research, based on data from the Tipiṭaka, commentaries, related documents, and research works. The findings are presented through descriptive analysis. The research results reveal that 1) the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta appears in the Sutta Piṭaka, Dīgha Nikāya, Mahāvagga. It consists of six bhāṇavāras and forty-four sections. Its content records important events during the final period of the Buddha’s life, including his final journey, the exposition of significant doctrines, the relinquishment of the life-sustaining will, and his attainment of final Nibbāna. 2) The roles of Ānanda Thera in the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta are clearly evident in his capacity as the Buddha’s attendant, the one who responded to the Buddha’s instructions, a coordinator, and a person who managed immediate situations. He performed his duties in times of crisis with mindfulness, prudence, and responsibility toward the Buddha, the Saṅgha, and the general public. 3) The analysis shows that Ānanda Thera’s roles can be classified into three main aspects: 1) the five etadagga normative roles praised by the Buddha, namely, Bahussuta, Sati, Gati, Dhiti, and Upatthaka; 2) the role of thinking and decision-making based on accurate information appropriate to each situation; and 3) the role related to social structures, including the state, the Saṅgha, and the wider community. The integration of these three aspects enabled Ānanda Thera to manage his duties effectively during the Buddha’s final days. These roles can also be applied as a model for decision-making, planning, and crisis management in contemporary organizations.
