Abstract

Fajia is Legalism, a significant school of thought in ancient Chinese philosophy that emerged during the Warring States period (5th to 3rd Centuries BCE). This philosophical tradition is primarily associated with the works of Han Fei (Han Feizi) and encompasses a pragmatic and realist approach to governance and statecraft. Key tenets of Fajia include the strict rule of law, centralized authority, meritocracy, pragmatism, and a focus on practical governance rather than idealistic or moralistic principles. Fajia advocates the use of well-defined laws and consistent rewards and punishments as the foundation of government, emphasizing the centralization of power in the hands of the ruler. This school’s influence can be observed in the governance of the Qin Dynasty, which unified China under Legalist principles, though it also faced resistance due to its authoritarian tendencies. Fajia’s legacy endures as a crucial element in the development of Chinese political thought and the ongoing debate between pragmatic governance and ethical rule.
