A Comparative Study of Moral Responsibility of Youth in Theravada Buddhism and Cotholic Christianity

Abstract

This thesis titled has three primary objectives: 1) to study of moral responsibility of youth in Theravada Buddhism, 2) to study of moral responsibility of youth in Cotholic Christianity, and 3) to compare of moral responsibility of youth in Theravada Buddhism and Cotholic Christianity. This research is a documentary study, gathering data from the Tripitaka, Bible scriptures, and related research documents. The findings revealed that: 1) In Theravada Buddhism, moral responsibility for youth is grounded in ethical conduct based on the Five Precepts, social virtues like the Four Bases of Success (Iddhipada), and the cultivation of gratitude toward parents, teachers, and monastics. 2) In Catholic Christianity, moral responsibility is guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Ten Commandments, emphasizing love, faith, and service to others, including honoring one’s parents, loving one’s neighbors, and fulfilling responsibilities within the family and society. 3) The comparative analysis showed that both traditions encourage youth to be virtuous, responsible, and community-oriented. However, they differ in foundational concepts: Buddhism emphasizes self-reliance and mindfulness, whereas Catholicism focuses on faith in God and love as the core of moral life.
