Analyzing the Principles of the Noble Eightfold Path: The Center of Virtuous Relation
Main Article Content
Abstract
This academic article aims to study the development of the Noble Eightfold Path, a fundamental Buddhist principle taught by the Buddha as the definitive way to the cessation of suffering. As the "Middle Way" (Majjhima Patipada), it avoids the extremes of sensual indulgence and self-mortification. Through a systematic analysis of the eight factors—Right View, Right Resolve, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration—this study illustrates a structured process for mental and intellectual development. Based on an analysis of the Tipitaka and Atthakatha (Commentaries), the findings reveal that the Noble Eightfold Path is a practical framework rather than mere abstract theory. When integrated into daily life, these interconnected factors provide a functional methodology for liberation. Specifically, Right View serves as the foundation of wisdom, leading to Right Resolve which purifies thought. These are supported by the three moral factors that stabilize the mind, while the final three concentration factors lead to the realization of ultimate truth. Ultimately, the Noble Eightfold Path represents a holistic system for human development, comprehensively covering the dimensions of morality (Sila), mental cultivation (Citta-bhavana), and wisdom cultivation (Panna-bhavana).
