Abstract
The purpose of this academic article is to present the Buddhist-oriented public welfare work of Wat Thep Surin, Surin Province, with a focus on social welfare activities grounded in Buddhist principles. The study employs both documentary research and fieldwork as its primary methods, followed by content analysis, and is presented in essay form. The findings reveal that Wat Thep Surin, Surin Province, plays a significant role in public welfare. Under the leadership of Phra Khru Sripariyattisathorn (Phra Maha Surat Indapanjo), the temple has initiated various projects and activities to promote social welfare. These include governance, education, dissemination of Buddhist teachings, public utilities, restoration and renovation, social welfare, and special projects. All of these initiatives are carried out in accordance with the Buddhist teaching that emphasizes actions for the happiness of the many and for the benefit of the world, without seeking personal gain. They also align with the contemporary role of Buddhist monks in Thai society, which extends beyond performing religious duties. Monks serve as leaders in spiritual and intellectual guidance, offering impartial explanations of social problems and supporting social institutions such as education and culture. Furthermore, they provide moral and ethical training for youth, act as sources of encouragement and spiritual refuge in times of crisis, and integrate all sectors of society to foster unity through traditions and rituals. Monks also function as mechanisms of social control, using Buddhist principles and moral precepts to guide public behavior, thereby ensuring peace, order, and harmony within society.
