A Comparative Study of the Devaluation of Others in Relation to the Doctrine of Karma in Theravada Buddhism and Roman Catholic Christianity

Abstract
This research article aims to: 1) examine the devaluation of others in relation to the belief in karma in Theravada Buddhism; 2) investigate similar tendencies within Roman Catholic Christianity; and 3) compare these perspectives across the two traditions. The study employs a documentary research methodology, drawing on the Pāli Canon, the Bible, and relevant scholarly works. The findings revealed that 1) Theravada Buddhism presents a systematic doctrine of karma emphasizing causality. However, misinterpretations may lead to viewing individuals’ suffering solely as the result of their own past actions, potentially diminishing compassion. Nonetheless, the principles of loving-kindness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), and equanimity (upekkhā) serve as safeguards against such devaluation. 2) In Roman Catholic Christianity, teachings on sin, redemption, and salvation may also be interpreted in ways that foster judgment toward others. Yet, the concepts of agape (selfless love) and inherent human dignity endowed by God provide a strong foundation for respect and acceptance. 3) Comparatively, while the two religions differ conceptually Buddhism emphasizing the law of karma and Christianity emphasizing the relationship between humans and God they share common ethical foundations that promote compassion, love, and human dignity. This study highlights that balanced and accurate interpretation of religious teachings is crucial in preventing the devaluation of others and fostering peaceful and respectful coexistence in society.
