Abstract

This research article aimed to: 1) study faith and rituals in Buddhist healing related to Bhaisajyaguru; 2) study faith and rituals in Buddhist healing related to Phra Kring Pawares; and 3) comparatively examine faith and rituals in Buddhist healing related to the Medicine Buddha through a case study of Bhaisajyaguru and Phra Kring Pawares. This study employed a qualitative research methodology using documentary research and field study in Bangkok and its vicinity. The key informants consisted of 26 participants, including monks, scholars, ritual practitioners, and lay Buddhists from both Mahāyāna and Theravāda traditions. Data collection instruments included semi-structured interviews and documentary review. Data were analyzed through content analysis and thematic analysis and presented by descriptive analysis. The research findings revealed that: 1) the concept of Buddhist healing in the context of Bhaisajyaguru is rooted in the Bodhisattva ideal, great compassion, and the Twelve Great Vows, aiming to heal suffering in physical, mental, spiritual, and social dimensions. Devotees commonly engage in chanting the Buddha’s name, reciting dhāraṇī, and performing religious rituals to cultivate encouragement, hope, and holistic well-being; 2) the concept of Buddhist healing in the context of Phra Kring Pawares is associated with beliefs in Buddhist sacred power, the sanctity of religious objects, and consecration rituals in Thai Theravāda Buddhism. Phra Kring Pawares functions as a symbolic medium of faith that enhances psychological stability, reassurance, and spiritual well-being among devotees; and 3) although Bhaisajyaguru and Phra Kring Pawares differ in doctrinal background, ritual forms, and cultural contexts, both employ faith and rituals as essential mechanisms of Buddhist healing in creating meaning, reducing suffering, and promoting holistic well-being. The new body of knowledge derived from this research is the “Faith-Ritual Buddhist Healing Model,” which explains the process through which faith leads to ritual participation, resulting in psychological transformation, healing, and holistic well-being. This model can be applied to spiritual health promotion, patient care, community development, and the strengthening of social resilience in contemporary Buddhist contexts.
