Cinderella’s Tales of Southern Chinese Minorities
Abstract
This article aims at describing the structures of the Cinderella tales of ethnic minorities in southern China, and comparing the Cinderella tales of ethnic groups in southern China with those of Thailand. Past studies have shown that the Cinderella type tale of ethnic minorities in southern China has a complex structure which is derived from a combination of the oldest Cinderella version called the Yexian tale and the Snake-bridegroom type tale. Through comparison, it is found that the Cinderella tales from southern China share similar structures and motifs with the Golden Goby tale in Thai culture, reflecting the shared cultural roots of ethnic groups in southern China and the Thai people.
