Candidate Selection within Political Parties: Alternative Choices and Recommendations for Thailand

Abstract
This paper explores the types of legislative-candidate selection used in several democratic countries, particularly those that have experience in applying primary election to choose parties’ candidates. The aim of this exploration is to develop some alternative methods appropriate to Thailand’s political context and that correspond to provisions stated in the drafted constitution that passed a national referendum on August 7, 2016. After presenting alternative models of candidate selection for discussion with involved persons—politicians, people with experience in working in electoral processes and party-support affairs—through in-depth interviews and focus groups, this paper suggests that in Thailand a primary election system should be effectively established in parties’ candidate selection process and utilized as a mechanism aiming to enhance intra-party democracy and encourage concrete and meaningful participation of party members and other eligible voters in political parties’ affairs.
