The objectives of this study were 1) to improve achievement in the music appreciation course by using a cooperative learning model for undergraduate students and 2) to compare students' achievement in the music appreciation course before and after using a cooperative learning model for undergraduate students. There were 35 students from freshmen in the second–semester academic years 2023 in Yunnan University, which is in the music appreciation course through the cluster random sampling. The research instruments involved 1) Lesson plan by using a cooperative learning model and 2) Achievement music appreciation course tests (essay test and performance assessment). Data were statistically analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and t-test for dependent samples.
The results revealed the followings:
1) Improvement of achievement in the music appreciation course by using a cooperative learning model for undergraduate students. The researcher studied and synthesized the cooperative learning model 5 steps: 1) Preparation stage, 2) Teaching stage, 3) Group activity stage, 4) Inspection and testing stage, and 5) summary and group work evaluation stage. The data analysis was assessment of the quality of the lesson plan according to cooperative learning model by 3 experts, and the results are shown that, the suitability of the research objectives has most suitable. After students have learned according to the lesson plans 1) basic knowledge of music appreciation, 2) expressive elements of music appreciation, and 3) style of music, the result showed that, the achievement in the music appreciation course the average score after learning by using cooperative learning model was 39.06 which was higher than the average score before learning was 11.00.
2) The comparison of students' achievement in the music appreciation course between before and after learning by using a cooperative learning model for undergraduate students. The results showed overall that, the improvement of achievement in the music appreciation course after learning higher than before learning statistically significant at the level .01.
