The objectives of this study were 1) to use experiential learning to improve achievement of basic nursing course of nursing students and 2) to compare students' achievement of basic nursing course before and after the implementation base on the experiential learning. Through cluster random sampling, 40 nursing students from sophomore of Weifang Nursing Vocational College, China, in the second semester, academic year 2023. The research instruments involved 1) lesson plan according to base on experiential learning and 2) Achievement of Basic Nursing Course test (multiple choice test and performance assessment). Data were statistically analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and t-test for dependent samples.
The results revealed the followings:
- Using experiential learning to improve achievement of basic nursing course of nursing students. The researcher has studied the documents and research related on experiential learning from many researchers and synthesized into 4 steps for lesson plan developing: 1) Concrete experience, 2) Reflective Observation, 3) Abstract Conceptualization, and 4) Active Experimentation. The data analysis was assessment of the quality of the lesson plan according to experiential learning by 3 experts, and the results are shown the quality of the lesson plan by experts overall, the suitability of the research objectives has the most suitable. After 40 nursing students have learned according to the lesson plans, students’ achievement of the basic nursing course score between before and after learning using experiential learning of nursing students, the average score before learning was 33.58, the average score after learning was 50.39.
2) The comparison of students' achievement of basic nursing course score before and after learning using experiential learning of nursing students. The results found that achievement of basic nursing course score of students after learning higher than before learning statistically significant at the .01 level.
