Abstract

The objectives of this study were to study and rank the mobile applications used for learning English sounds and words by the use of linguistic criteria. According to Chen’s Criteria (2016), there are 7 criteria for evaluating the mobile application which are content quality, pedagogical coherence, feedback, motivation, usability, customization and sharing. The samples in this research were free mobile applications for learning English by using linguistic notions on both iOS and android. The ranking is considered by the sum of average score in each category.

The result found that the ranking of the evaluated applications for learning English sounds and words was: The Prefix & Suffix Game, Sounds: The Pronunciation App and AV Phonetics, Say It: English Pronunciation, Phonetic Cards, Greek and Latin roots finders and Wordify- Word Maker respectively. The finding indicated that the more interactive applications tend to motivate learners to use them for their self-learning. In addition, all applications consist of the components that related to the criteria except customization and sharing.
