Abstract

This research aimed to explore the metacognitive awareness of academic reading strategies and the use of metacognitive strategies in reading academic texts among Thai EFL learners. The population of this study were the second and third year students (N = 130) of Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University in the second semester of academic year 2020. The Survey of Reading Strategies Questionnaire (SORS) developed by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002) was used to collect the data concerning the use of metacognitive reading strategies. The reliability of overall questionnaire was 0.96. Statistics used in this study were average score and standard deviation. The findings demonstrated that the respondents were moderately aware of metacognitive reading strategies with an overall mean score of 3.08 (X̅ = 3.08, S.D. = 0.04) and the most frequently used strategies were the Problem-Solving Reading Strategies (PROB), followed by Support Reading Strategies (SUP), and Global Reading Strategies (GLOB) respectively.
Therefore, this research confirmed the previous research in that the Problem-Solving Reading Strategies were mostly perceived by English nonnative students in their reading. The findings also advocate the need for Thai EFL learners to have knowledge of metacognitive reading strategies and teaching the students to use metacognitive strategies, which can be a solution to enhance students’ reading ability.
