Abstract

            The study of Paul Hindemith's Sonata for Tuba and Piano is part of the researcher's completion of a master's degree. This piece is significant to the tuba repertoire as it is the first sonata ever composed for the instrument, presenting high levels of technical difficulty and performance challenges. The study aims to analyze and interpret the composition as a foundation for the researcher's master’s thesis in tuba solo performance. The analysis encompasses the composer’s biography, the historical context of the piece, and its technical performance aspects. The research process involved gathering academic sources, analyzing the musical structure and techniques, devising practice methods, and selecting exercises tailored to specific challenges. The findings are presented with conclusions and recommendations to aid performers. The study emphasizes the importance of accurate execution of wide intervals, adherence to articulation markings, and precision in ornamentation. The researcher advises readers to carefully interpret and follow the musical instructions to achieve a high-standard performance.
