Development of E-Learning Media for Cross-Cultural Learning and Reducing Youth Violence in Thailand: A Hermeneutic Phenomenology Study

Abstract

Background/ problem: Youth violence in three southern border provinces of Thailand, driven by cultural misunderstandings, has persisted for over two decades. This study aimed to apply behavioral science knowledge to explore community recommendations for develop e-learning media aimed at promoting cross cultural understanding, reshaping attitudes, and fostering conflict free interactions.


Objective/ purpose: This research aimed to explore community recommendations for developing e-learning media designed to foster cross cultural learning and reducing youth violence in three southern border provinces of Thailand.


Design and Methodology: This qualitative research used hermeneutic phenomenology approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and brainstorming with 203 participants. These included, youth council members from 3 provinces (n = 30), child and family welfare center heads (n = 3), government social development leaders (n = 3), youth representatives (n = 24), religious leaders (n = 8), university scholars (n = 5), and general youth participants (n = 130). Verbatim transcription were employed, with data credibility verified through triangulation.


Findings: Eight key recommendations emerged for the development of e-learning media: understanding cultural diversity, teaching adaptation skills, emphasizing communication, promoting respect for differences, fostering collaboration, applying conflict resolution techniques, connecting content to real life experiences, and using thought provoking questions.


Conclusion and Implications: These findings suggest effective approaches for developing e-learning media should be based on community recommendations. Aligning media with local needs enhances community engagement and improves the effectiveness of violence prevention, leading to sustainable peace in communities.
