Abstract

Executive Functions (EF) constitute a set of higher-order cognitive processes essential for self-regulation, adaptation, and lifelong learning, with their primary neural basis in the prefrontal cortex. This article aims to synthesize the theoretical connections between play and EF development, and to propose practical guidelines integrated with the Thai cultural context. The study addresses EF development within a comprehensive nine-domain framework: Working Memory, Inhibitory Control, Cognitive Flexibility, Sustained Attention, Emotional Control, Monitoring, Initiating, Planning/Organizing, and Goal-Directed Persistence. Drawing on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, the analysis indicates that purposeful play and dramatic role-play—particularly activities that integrate Thai indigenous wisdom and traditional folk games such as Mon Sorn Pha (Mon Hiding the Scarf), Ree Ree Khao Sarn, Nguu Kin Hang (Snake Eating Its Tail), Dern Kala (Coconut-Shell Walking), and local market role-play—function as effective mechanisms for stimulating and strengthening all nine EF domains in early childhood. This article therefore offers clear, actionable guidelines for teachers, parents, and policymakers to apply in establishing a stable and sustainable neurological foundation for Thai children.
